The Government of Canada provides financial support therefore Petrobank Energy and Resources Ltd. in the development of the project WHITESANDS.
This project involves, among others, the implementation of a new process of oil sands recovery called THAIMD (Toe-to-hell Air Injection). This technology combines a vertical air injection well and a horizontal production well. While the wellbore will be preheated to steam using the air injection will cause combustion
Spontaneous whose heat will reduce the viscosity of oil. So it will take, according to the principle of gravity, to the horizontal production well. This process should allow the recovery of 70 80% a% of oil originally present while allowing partial recovery of crude oil in situ.
Canada's oil sands are a strategic source of energy in North America. However, current technology in situ production requires the consumption of a significant volume of natural gas, fresh water or solvent for hydrocarbons. Under the THAIMD technology, all of the required heat is generated in the tank instead of there being introduced by the steam generated on the surface by means of natural gas,
expensive process and, in addition, produces carbon dioxide.
Petrobank has acquired the intellectual property rights of THAIMD technology and 2003 has received the regulatory, approval in 2004 to implement a pilot project to develop this technology and put it to the test in the field.
