An interesting study on road safety in Belgium, rare, charts and diagrams whose unit is the km.passager traveled. The figures for France are probably similar, this study therefore gives good orders of magnitude.
To combat road carnage, the federal government created in May 2001 States General for Road Safety which proposed the federal government to set a target reduction 50% of the annual number of deaths on the roads Belgians for 2010 year compared to the average of 1998 years 1999 and 2000.
This goal was part of the similar target set by the European Commission in its White Paper "European transport policy for the 2010 horizon", and as part of the objectives of the Flemish region. Many recommendations for achieving this objective were presented at the public day of February 25 2002. To quickly record an improvement in road safety, the cornerstone of the recommendations was based on the combination of awareness campaigns and enforcement to improve the behavior of users of the roads.
Five years after this event, and through the efforts of all stakeholders in road safety at the federal, regional, provincial or local, remarkable progress has been made since the number of killed in 2005 is less than 27,5% average 1998 - 2000, which represents the period decreased from the third best European countries. This report presents a summary of the most representative data on the evolution of road safety in Belgium between 2000 and 2005.
The progress made over the period are remarkable, but were the easiest to record. The continued improvement of road safety to achieve the goal of saving lives per year 750 involve additional efforts. This is why the Federal Commission for Road Safety (CFSR) present new recommendations that are detailed in this report.
Although Belgium reached the target of reducing 50% the number of road deaths, the results achieved by the best performing countries in road safety show that further progress is possible and must be registered. We therefore propose that the government set a target of not exceeding 500 road deaths in Belgium in 2015 and take all necessary measures to achieve this goal.
The recommendations presented in this report have been the subject of many discussions in the various working groups and plenary sessions of the Federal Commission for Road Safety, but always in a constructive spirit and taking into account
the unspeakable suffering of road accident victims and their relatives. We wish to thank the members of the Federal Commission for Road Safety and the working groups for their efforts and contributions to this report.
