Construction of an underwater pipeline by Medgaz (Algeria gas pipeline Spain Europe)
The underwater pipeline will be constructed using a "Lay Barge". This involves using a mobile boat or platform where the tubes will be welded before being laid on the seabed.
There are two methods for this type of installation: "S-shaped" and "J-shaped". The first can be applied in both shallow and deep areas (up to 2.500 meters). It is a matter of welding and laying the tubes in a horizontal position, so that the pipeline will adopt an "S" shape at the outlet of the boat to the point where it rests on the seabed.
The "J-shaped installation" assumes a welding of the tubes in vertical position. It is only used for depths between 400 and 3.500 meters, depending on the diameter of the tube. As the platform advances the pipeline dives vertically under the sea in a "J" shape, from the point of launch to the bottom.
MEDGAZ will use both systems for the construction of the pipeline in very deep waters. Following we describe the J-lay ...
