From the 1er January the over 12 ton trucks operating in Germany must pay a fee of between 9 and 14 cents per kilometer. Transmitters, called OBU (On Board Unit), set on trucks, will track a satellite truck and then automatically charge their toll. This new state system, operated by Toll Collect, the Franco-German consortium of Daimler Benz (45%), Deutsche Telekom (45%) and Cofiroute (10%) will finally start after 16 months behind the original schedule. Transport companies expect major disruptions on January 2. Violators face fines of up to 20.000 euros.
