The Life Cycle Assessment (CVA) method in Japan

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a methodology for calculating
objectively the impact of a product on the environment throughout its
existence, from the extraction of raw materials to its
elimination. Since its appearance in Japan in the early 1990s, the ACV
has been extensively studied and applied by research organizations,
universities, industry and government.
Recognized as an effective tool for developing strategies for
sustainable development, LCA owes its success in part to the support of
Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, which launched in 1998
a national LCA project. This project enabled the development of the largest
ACV database of the world, available since a few months.
Japan is now one of the most widely used LCA countries,
particularly in the industrial environment. The analyzes focus on a vast
range of products and services, such as fuel cell vehicles
or waste management in a prefecture. This report aims to
give a general overview of LCA activity by presenting the methodologies
developed and the many applications.
