The North Sea is warming

Global warming already has a significant impact in the North Sea.

It has caused the displacement of benthic fish shoals to the north or to deeper layers of the ocean. These changes concern twenty and thirty-six species studied by a team of British researchers (1) who accumulated data between 1977 and 2001.

Among the species observed cod, white hake and monkfish. If current trends continue, some species may completely withdraw from the North Sea by 2050, oceanographers argue. (1) Science, 12 May 2005
