Isolate with recycled cellulose: Materials

Presentation of a bulk cellulose wadding installation to insulate lost attics

Read the preliminary thinking (choice of materials, design and cost) for this installation: choose an insulating: the choice of cellulose wadding?

Small reminder: what is isolated?

This installation concerns the insulation of lost roof spaces of 44 m² with respectively 42 m² of loose cellulose wadding 26 cm thick and 2 m² of hemp panels 20 cm thick.

Reception of materials

a) Cellulose

The cellulose wadding is delivered compressed in bags corresponding to approximately 370L “installed”, ie when the cellulose is flocculated. So roughly speaking, you need less than 3 bags to make 1 m3.

For our 42m², the amount of insulation required, ie 30 bags, holds 2 pallets of about 2 m3 but yet this makes almost 11 m3 in the end.

The cellulose is branded "Thermofloc" (free pub) and is made in Austria. Obviously I would have preferred more local production, but Austria apparently still has a European monopoly in the manufacture of bulk cellulose ...

b) Hemp wool panels

The hemp wool panels are delivered “as is” by 3 corresponding to 2,07 m².

A pack of 3 will be sufficient for our needs. I just regret that the thickness is limited to 20 cm but there was no choice. The price is also quite high: 35 € / m² including tax (not delivered).

The brand is Steico - product reference: Canaflex. (free pub bis)

Steico is a German brand with several factories in Europe: Czarnków and Czarna Woda in Poland and Casteljaloux in France. I do not know exactly where the Canaflex is made or where hemp is grown. But one thing is certain: the final product is made in Europe.
