Mauritius wants to develop wind energy

After solar energy and that produced from bagasse and coal, Mauritius is turning to the wind as part of its national policy to maximize the use of renewable energy resources, said PANA, Wednesday government source .

Discussions are currently underway on this subject between the "Central Electricity Board" (CEB), the sole supplier of electricity on the island and the Indian company Suzlon Energy Ltd, with the aim of creating an electricity production park at from wind turbines in Bigara, in the center of the island

According to a government official, this is consistent with the national policy favoring the exploitation of renewable energy sources, given the constant rise in the cost of petroleum products on the world market. It is also consistent with the Memorandum of Understanding between Mauritius and India to encourage investment in this area.

“This electricity production park will include around twenty wind turbines with a production capacity of 25 megawatts. But the electricity produced will depend on the wind speed in the region concerned, ”he pointed out.

Wind energy is not new in Mauritius where a wind turbine was installed in Grand Bassin, in the south, in 1987, with the help of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) before being abandoned after 17 months of operation due to a problem with the supply of spare parts.

Rodrigues Island, at 350 km northeast and dependent on Mauritius, has a small production unit with three turbines from 2003.

About 56% of the electricity production in the island is provided by heavy oil, 39% by bagasse and coal and 5% by the water that turns the turbines.
