Soil that can enhance global warming

The carbon contained in the soil would be much more sensitive to global warming than previously thought. It could thus constitute an additional source of greenhouse gases.

An international scientific team has shown for the first time how the soil reacts to global warming across the planet. The findings show that the soil would help accelerate this global climate phenomenon: under the effect of heat, the microorganisms in the soil would break down organic material more quickly, and would release more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere - which would reinforce the change. climate.

The research team of the Max-Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Jena, the University of Bristol in Great Britain, and the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, in the United States, have published their work in the January 20 edition of the journal Nature.
