English researchers train a jumping spider

The World 10 May 2018

For researchers at the University of Manchester, a spider "Phidippus regius" nicknamed Kim has practiced jumping on command. She can skip up to six times the size of her body. The goal of the English scientists is to understand the mechanism used by the little beast to jump so far to recreate it with a simplified robotic replica. They know that she is able to use both the strength of her muscles and a hydraulic force, but the mechanics linking the two remains unclear.

Arctic: these reindeer go round and no one knows why

by Yohan Residence 11 May 2018,

An incredible video shot in northwestern Russia and published by a local researcher leaves one wondering. We can see herds of reindeer circling without stopping, a veritable circular race without end of which no one has yet found the real reason.

Image

The 1er May 2018, the researcher Andrei Golovnev, also director of the Museum of Ethnography and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Kunstkamera), has posted a surprising video on his Facebook page. The images obtained by a drone at the end of April were filmed on the Kola peninsula, located in the extreme north-west of Russia.

It is possible to see on these images three herds of reindeer literally turning in circles at full speed in their enclosure.

a dog can not drown because of its anatomical constitution with the periscope head. Despite all the help of the other dog shows that the intelligence of this one corresponds to ours and to our values "humanistic", reminding us that we are also animals!

Elephant Haven: the first sanctuary for European elephants continues its construction in Limousin

The April 24 2018

In Limousin in Bussière-Galant, work is in full swing to build the first elephant sanctuary in Europe, Elephant Haven. Imagined by two Belgian animal caretakers, Sofie Goetghebeur and Tony Verhulst, the "retirement home" for pachyderms could receive its first boarders by the end of 2018.

Elephants will soon have their haven of peace in Europe. A small green paradise where they can rest from their years of captivity in circus or zoo. In Limousin, in Bussière-Galant, the first sanctuary for European elephants is indeed emerging on the grounds of an old horse farm spread over 28 hectares.

Two former Antwerp zoo groomers, Sofie Goetghebeur and Tony Verhulst, are at the origin of the project. The idea was born from their passion for pachyderms but also from an observation. According to their estimates, circuses would have no less than 141 elephants in Europe. But this presence is more and more questionable.

The oldest tree in Europe is an 1.230 Heldreich pine, which scientists have nicknamed Italus. It grows in a national park in southern Italy. His age was calculated by combining radiocarbon measurements and an analysis of his rings.

Indonesia: an orang-utan rushes on a bulldozer to destroy his forest
The English organization International animal rescue has released a video showing a big monkey defying a construction machine in the Indonesian forest.

the 08 / 06 / 2018

David against Goliath. The British organization "International Animal Rescue" aired Tuesday 5 June a heartbreaking video showing an orangutan struggling to safeguard its natural habitat.

Perched on a tree trunk ripped off in an Indonesian forest, the great monkey rushes towards a bulldozer to try to stop him. Far too uneven, the fight is lost in advance. The video spotted by our fellow Parisian shows indeed the orangutan drop heavily on the ground, not without trying to grasp the shovel of the machine.

On his Facebook account, the organization explains that the primate was trying to find a refuge in this devastated forest. "Despite all the obstacles she had to overcome, our team was able to save the orangutan and put it in a safe place," welcomes International Animal Rescue.

But the organization continues its message in a much more pessimistic tone: "Unfortunately, these scenes tend to become more and more frequent.Deforestation is causing the population of the Urang-utans to fall and destroy their habitat, making them die of hunger".
