The site Kyot home récement has published an article about the health consequences of urban pollution on mortality.
The numbers are scary, here are some selected pieces:
"Air pollution is a disaster for public health even more than for climate. "
"One learns that on an urban population of 15 259 590 inhabitants of 76 agglomerations of France in 2002, 9513 deaths would be attributable to the pollution by the fine particles. This represents 4,9% of the total mortality of this same population that year! "
"France alone would see 31 700 dead of air pollution per year including 17 600 (56%) attributable to road traffic alone !!"
An "interesting" comparison between pollution and road accidents is also carried out by the author of this article:
"The exhaust of cars, motorcycles and trucks kill 2,4 times more than road accidents !! The real obituary of the road is 17 600 + 7242 = 24 842 dead a year !!! We would very much like the road safety figures to include ALL victims ... "
