yes, polystyrene ...
a plate of the right size, comes to float and prevent mosquitoes to lay and larvae to come to breathe on the surface ...

Misterloxo, do not you think there will be the same problem as devil? not tight enough?
unless the lids of the trade are not floating on the surface?

I allow myself to add some arguments for the use of my protections.
They are 100% impervious to the passage of mosquitoes. Very easy to remove and put back in place with their elastic periphery.
But above all, and this is the main argument, they just have to make it a small rain or a big storm that fill your collectors. Once the recuperator full, it can overflow easily with no problem with the curtain in place (if you have not planned automatic overflow)
You tell me "mosquitoes can lay on the surface ..." that's true, but it does not matter and you can even let the larvae grow for a while. Then just remove the curtain (filter), shake it and you're done.
Small precision: it is 1 year that I moved and it will take me time to find my home. My current collectors are simple barrels of 60 120 liters in which I take the water with a bucket. So, I needed a simple and practical solution.

Nah, I do not think so. If the plate is the right size and the container is suitable.
Anyway, there is not ONE solution.
The solutions of chatam and deviltruc seem to me just as good ... everything depends on the recuperator, the intended use for this water ...
Personally, if the polystyrene does not work, I will choose the imp solution ... well yes, I am sensitive to the work of scientists tending to show that water "memorizes" certain information ...

The idea of a simple textile stretched and surrounded by an elastic seems effective.
It is true that I can hardly see mosquitoes entering through the mesh of a curtain fabric!) After that, there is still the worry of the "recovery" of water, if the reserve is connected to a pump which is not always available. primed or waterproof, but as I think this is extremely rare, no worries.
