Google launches in the fight against deforestation

by recyclinage » 15/12/09, 11:16

To help scientists and states to fight against deforestation, Google provides them with Google Earth satellite images coupled with the principle of cloud computing to allow them to quickly analyze data.

Google presented on the sidelines of the UN climate summit, which will be held until December 18 in Copenhagen (Denmark), a new tool allowing to follow on the Web the progress of deforestation in the world from the Google Earth service.

The Mountain View company thus makes available to scientists, ecologists and states free of charge, but also to all Internet users who wish it, satellite images available via Google Earth and its great computing power made possible thanks to cloud computing to help them control and stem the disappearance of forests on the globe.

"Having the means to detect illegal killings more quickly can help enforce local law and prevent future deforestation," said Rebecca Moore and Amy Luers, who work for Google.org, the philanthropic arm of Google.

The photos provided by the Google Earth service make it possible to measure in real time the extent of the phenomenon of deforestation. But the Mountain View firm offers to go further, by allowing scientists to develop continuous analyzes by allocating them, thanks to cloud computing, a large computing power to follow this evolution in real time, analyze the data and make comparisons.

This deforestation measurement tool will be accessible free of charge online during 2010
