Klaus against the Lisbon Treaty

by recyclinage » 16/10/09, 10:02

Nicolas Sarkozy assured that the problem posed by the opposition of Czech President Vaclav Klaus to the Lisbon Treaty, which he described as "unacceptable", would be "settled at the end of the year", in an interview with Le Figaro to be released on Friday.

Mr. Klaus' refusal to sign the Lisbon Treaty "is all the more inadmissible since the Czech Parliament voted in favor of the treaty and the Czech government is in favor of its ratification. But the Czech president will not be able to play on the two tables, "said Sarkozy.

"The hour of choice arrives for him and it will not be without consequences. In any case, this question will be settled at the end of the year", continued the French head of state.

Vaclav Klaus has just conditioned his signature on the treaty to a derogation for his country preventing any restitution of the property of the Sudeten Germans confiscated after the Second World War, under decrees signed by the then Czechoslovak president, Edvard Benes.

Referring also to the appointment, within the framework of the Lisbon Treaty, of a President of the European Union (EU), Nicolas Sarkozy considered that it was "too early" to say whether the former British Prime Minister Tony Blair would be a good candidate for the post and added that "Britain's not in the euro remains a problem".
