A recent research and econological CNRS: soil remediation, a mushroom that eats chemical pollution (aromatics and whatnot)

After a few decades of intensive agriculture, research to purge our soils of many industrial substances is well underway. A promising solution is coming today ... from a common filamentous fungus, Podospora anserina. The result of a collaboration between three 1 laboratories associated with the CNRS, a study published in May2 proves that Podospora anserina is indeed able to "digest" polluting molecules by modifying them chemically thanks to one of its enzymes. Result: where another living species would have succumbed, the fungus assimilates the pollutant and transforms it into another harmless compound. And the environment is sanitized.
