Bad weather: violent thunderstorms kill at least 7 people in Eastern Europe
Six people died and 34 were seriously injured following severe thunderstorms that hit parts of Poland on Thursday evening. In the Czech Republic, a 75-year-old woman was killed by a branch fallen from a tree.
Most people have died as a result of falling trees that are broken or uprooted by high winds, a spokesman for the Polish fire department said. Thunderstorms and storms also left hundreds of people with minor injuries. Road traffic was interrupted on dozens of local and national roads, as well as on some railway tracks. The storm also hit the capital of Poland, Warsaw, causing several trees to fall. Dozens of localities, as well as parts of two large Polish cities - Wroclaw in the southwest and Lodz in the center - were deprived of electricity as a result of the high winds. They blew at times at 100 kilometers per hour. In Krotoszyn, in the west of the country, the storm left 17 people injured, six of them seriously. They were electrocuted by a high voltage line which fell on them. (DAD)
