Migrants from Calais: “green” police reaction?

by Cuicui » 23/07/09, 21:04

Sorry to be a little long, it's not my habit ...

To help the volunteers who take care of migrants en route to England, we collect small soaps and other hygiene products from hotels. In return, we received this thank you letter:
Dear supporters,
We have just received a bag of hygiene products that you sent us by the good care of Mrs. X ... from Boulogne sur mer. We thank you, for the migrants who will know how to make good use of it! Unfortunately for them, they do not have showers at their disposal, following problems of unwanted installation in the city of Calais by the Town Hall. The city of Calais is willing to have showers for them - but outside of the city, which would pose enormous travel difficulties for migrants and other problems for volunteers.
However, they wash where they can, in the canal, the sea and other water sources, if the police do not scare them away. Right now it's possible because the weather is pretty good. In winter, this becomes very problematic. It will be very useful, anyway. They have health problems due to this lack of hygiene, without the possibility of washing properly, especially skin problems. There is a center at Calais hospital where they can go for treatment - but there are between 600 and 800 at the moment, which makes consultations very uncertain.
Our concerns are mainly food, clothing, administrative help, “bobology”, support as much as possible for their daily problems.
Some examples :
- 7 days a week, a team prepares a hot meal. Pasta or rice, chicken, vegetables, dessert, bread and water. Another team distributes this meal - quite a job to feed 7 people. Someone went shopping or went to get donations of food on the right and on the left, someone went around the bakeries to collect the unsold bread.
- 7 days a week, a volunteer takes care of minor injuries as she can after the meal.
- A team takes care of the cloakroom, sorting, giving elsewhere what cannot be used. In winter we also give blankets, which are regularly sprayed by the tear gas police and become unusable. We do not have the means to wash clothes, so we have to renew our stock regularly.
- Other volunteers accompany them in their administrative procedures, lead them to the hospital, support them morally, find volunteer dentists, take care of repatriation of the bodies in the event of death.

Who are they ? Afghans, Eritreans, Africans from the Horn of Africa. They left their countries to find a better life elsewhere. They don't find it in France, so their goal is England. If you have seen the film "Welcome" know that it is really like that.
They are mostly young, between 14 and 25 years old and mostly men. They sleep where they can in deplorable conditions. Their life is extremely hard in Calais. But they are. for the most part, smiling, courageous and so happy to be close to their goal.

Thanks again for the package.
