(nl) The Queen threatened with death in the name of the animal cause?

A Dutch animal activist was arrested Monday by police on suspicion of planning an attack on Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. The suspect, Peter Janssen, is a well-known activist in the country and nicknamed the "vegan streaker". According to a spokesperson for the National Prosecutor's Office, the arrest warrant issued against Mr Janssen mentioned that he was suspected of planning an attack on Queen Beatrix, aged 71. "He was arrested yesterday (Monday) by national research which suspects him of this, which he denies," added the activist's lawyer, according to which Mr. Janssen should be presented to a court judge on Wednesday from The Hague or Rotterdam. "I must stress that the investigation is still ongoing and that it is not yet certain that it will be presented before a judge," responded the spokesman for the prosecution.

The suspect, 24, had been detained since April for a spectacular action in a mink farm in Stavenisse in the south-west of the country during which 2.500 animals were released, but he was released on bail on June 30, according to the prosecution. He is famous in the Netherlands for breaking into the simplest device in sporting events and a very popular television program, a way, according to him, of drawing public attention to animal suffering.

On April 30, during the traditional Queen's Day, a young man had rushed with his car into the crowd gathered in Apeldoorn (center) with the avowed aim of reaching the parade of the royal procession, causing the death of seven people. The attacker, whose car had crashed into a monument a few meters from the royal convoy, died of his injuries the next day. The controversial Dutch populist leader Pim Fortuyn had been assassinated on May 6, 2002 by an animal activist, Volkert van der Graaf, a few days before legislative elections in which the polls gave him winner.
