European Commission orders closure of non-standard landfills

As Member States do not respect their obligations in terms of waste disposal, the European Commission is raising the tone. It orders the closure of landfills located in the EU that do not meet the standards of European legislation. She warns that controls in member states will be stepped up, and that she will consider legal action against the state "outside European law".

Member States had until July 16, 2001 to bring their landfills to European standards or, failing that, to close them (Directive No. 99/31 / EC of April 26, 1999). But many of them are late, including France.
The Commission has therefore written to all the Member States which have not benefited from extensions to remind them of their obligations and to collect data on compliance.

Since July 16, 2009, member states are also required to halve, compared to 1995 levels, the amount of "biodegradable municipal waste landfilled."
This implies treating this waste according to "other more environmentally friendly waste management formulas", such as composting or incineration with energy recovery.
The Commission has requested information from the Member States in order to monitor compliance with this objective.
The next major milestone is set for 2016, when the reduction target will drop to 65% from 1995 levels.

For France, the latest statistics were published in August 2007. 45 illegal landfills then remained, in Corsica, Guyana, Guadeloupe, in Cher, Cantal, Aveyron and the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence.
Statistics from the 12 new member states, which date from 2008, reveal the existence of 1.600 non-standard landfills.
A more precise picture of the situation in all member states should emerge towards the end of the year, when the complete data have been received.
