Bonus penalty for all products? Reduced, simpler VAT

by Christophe » 07/09/08, 17:56

The government is considering extending the malus bonus to other energy-saving products than cars.

Better than nothing but for me it's a bit of blank ... this (or rather these) bonus penalty.

Why not just switch energy saving products to reduced VAT?

For example, Belgium has been talking for a while about switching fluorescent bulbs from 21 to 6% VAT ... but we still don't see the color.

It would be 10 times faster and easier to manage ... but it would be deadweight loss for the State. So what do we do with ecology or finance?

Extension of the bonus-malus: "The consensus is acquired", says Jean-Louis Borloo

A budgetary "consensus" has been found for the extension of the fiscal bonus-malus already applied to the automobile, said Sunday the Minister of Ecology Jean-Louis Borloo.

"That's it, consensus has been reached on all of this, there is no longer any great difficulty," he said on the sidelines of the UMP "Campus" meeting in Royan.

Budget Minister Eric Woerth recently stressed that the bonus-penalty applied to new cars has cost public finances nearly 140 million euros since its implementation in late 2007.

Mr. Borloo admitted Sunday that the generalization of the bonus-malus should lead to "overall balance" on a budgetary plan. In other words, "a bad product must finance the good".
According to the Minister of Ecology, the real difficulty in extending the system is to define "indisputable" standards.
The list of products to which the ecological bonus-penalty would be extended has not been finalized.

Asked about this, Mr. Borloo cited Sunday the example of detergents, but also of "canned tomatoes", the price of which could according to him be brought to change according to the seasons.
