Casino offers eco-friendly labeling (soon)!

by Christophe » 21/09/07, 10:20

I didn't think it would happen that quickly! Very good news! The study work for each product must be gigantic ...
Only downside: it only seems to concern "European" Casino products (necessarily in the case of the Chinese it would be a little in the very dark red for transport ...). Finally, let's not quibble, this is very good news for the environment and we hope that it will spill over !!

The Casino Group is developing environmental labeling for products under its brand. This labeling includes 3 indicators: mass and CO2 content of the packaging, recyclability, and distance traveled.

In the near future, you will find this environmental labeling system for Casino brand products in stores: the Saint-Etienne distributor has decided to inform consumers about the environmental impact of its products.

This system was developed by the company BIO Intelligence Service, on behalf of the company Casino. It has been validated by ADEME, which supports this project technically and financially.

The 3 indicators defined to date provide information on the key environmental challenges of consumer products at European level:

* The transport of food products represents more than a third of road freight traffic
* 27% (by weight) of household waste is packaging
* Over 80% of household packaging waste comes from food products

The labeling contains two levels of information: quantified information and a color code describing the extent of the associated environmental impacts (as in the case of the energy label).

The labeling format presented above is not final, it will be adapted soon, in order to be easily understood by all consumers.

Bonjour à tous

The idea which is good !!!!! :P
For the moment the orchestra is discreet but I hope that at the Grenelle of the environment for example, they will multiply this kind of initiative.

The ideal for this to remain credible, would be that the manufacturer / seller of the product gives its sources which one could consult freely on the net for example. If this falls into the hands of salespeople without any control, we can expect the worst .... : Cry:

Well for the moment it's limited to Casino products (if I understood everything correctly), probably precisely for a problem of data verification complexity for each product ...

The ideal would be a kind of standard, a bit like with household appliances ... but it is more difficult to test the supply of a kg of tomatoes than the consumption of a fridge ... especially than in the 1st if the variations are important ... in short, a nice ecological puzzle ... : Cheesy:

So here I say BRAVO !!!
Finally the beginning of the tool that we lacked to make our purchases in order to respect our environmental principles !!

To see that it is developing quickly and in other stores, we will be able to see if consumers (argh what a dirty word) are concerned, and if this will change their purchasing habits of certain products!

Long live transparency :D

Hoping that there are also controls on the methods so that it does not become a source of discord.

No, but Borloo made the statement today:

Apparently he wants to democratize eco-labeling!
It would have been much more to me to make eco-balance sheets of each product! :)
