The socio-ecological "cost" of Christmas toys

by Christophe » 04/12/10, 12:10

Interesting but so "guilty" article from Novethic:

At what price are Christmas toys made?

As Christmas approaches, brands and distributors of toys are in the starting blocks. To meet demand on time, Chinese workers who make 80% of the toys sold in the world have to work overtime for wages that are still very low and in extremely precarious working conditions, according to the NGO Peuples Solidaires and Sacom.

This year, despite the crisis, parents should not yet sacrifice the sacrosanct toy budget: like last year, at Christmas, French families should spend no less than 247 euros per child. But at the other end of the chain, Chinese workers, who make more than 80% of the toys in the world, will see little color. Because to produce in the prices and deadlines set by the principals that are the big brands (Mattel, Disney, etc) or distributors (Toys'R Us, Carrefour, Wal-Mart, etc) of Chinese factories multiply indeed breaches of safety and workers' rights rules, according to Peuples solidaires. Or rather women workers because, since this year, recruitment has become "sexually discriminatory"; young women are considered more "docile and productive" by factory management, says the Chinese NGO Sacom (see box).

At the moment Arte reportage, presents a reportage on some Chinese workers who begin to dare to demand better social conditions and wages, especially the young people who have done more studies, and discover their rights and less docile.

In France, companies do not have the right to bring in Chinese migrants, to make them work under the same conditions as in China, almost without social rules and very low wages. !!
Yet we find normal and fair in capitalist competition, that the same companies, employ the Chinese in China, under these conditions outside the law in France.
If we asked on products imported into France, to respect manufacturers in China in factories, the same social rules as those imposed on companies in France employing Chinese workers who came to work in France, everything would be totally different.
There would be more jobs in France and better paid Chinese.
It is in fact a condition for fair capitalist competition, which is not respected.

Are you sure it was on Arte and not France5?

Because Arte I watched and it concerned the ergo of rye, the salem witches and other witchcraft assassinations ...

Powerful rye ergo it amazes me that clever little ones try not to grow it at home ... ah yes it's deadly in high doses ... this probably explains that!

Wooden construction toys, locally made with socio-economic impact certainly much improved!
