Gulf Stream, the Achilles heel of the climate

by Christophe » 05/03/09, 21:53

An excellent documentary on the upheaval (which has already occurred in the past) of the Gulf Stream due to the "desanilization of sea water" near Greenland (melting ice = more fresh water = difference in density = decrease in "thermal pumping")

The Gulf Stream is a giant natural heat pump whose thermal power is equivalent to 1 nuclear reactors and the flow 000 times that of all rivers in the world!

He is already showing signs of weakness.

Its decrease will mitigate the impact of global warming in Western Europe before the effect is then reversed (in 200 to 300 years anyway ...): little ice age in Europe then big warming ...

But hey with the very long term weather we are never sure of anything ... but we know that this cycle has already happened!

Gulfstream, the Achilles heel of the climate

The Gulf Stream transports warm water from the tropics to the Norwegian Sea. There, this powerful ocean current plunges towards the abyss to circulate towards the south at the bottom of the Atlantic. However, this plunge into hot water could be stopped if their salinity were to decrease. This is what will happen when the Arctic ice melts, releasing huge amounts of fresh water to the North Atlantic. This catastrophic scenario poses a very real threat because global warming is an inexorable fact. Consequence: a slowdown of the Gulf Stream and a significant cooling of Europe

Coring with identification of foraminifera species showed that the Gulf Stream has already stopped several times.

The stop is not gradual and there are threshold effects which can interrupt the current quickly. The 200 to 300 year olds are not required. So much can be done in 50 years ...

Well, I'm going to invest in a mobile home, just to migrate south like storks. : Lol:

In fact the 300 years was the end of the small European ice age caused by the shutdown of the gulf stream ... if I remember correctly!

It is better explained in the video that I am putting on the EconoTV right now!

interesting, thank you Christophe!

This clearly shows that humans are playing with fire: we do not know what consequences massive CO2 emissions lead to the climate: it could be "very unpleasant" ... :?
