Base-station clean in Antarctica by the Polar Foundation

by Christophe » 05/09/07, 20:23

La International Polar Foundation is building an antarctic base that is fully autonomous in energy. Apparently it's a world premiere.

From what I understood, it is the 100% electric provided by 3 or 4 wind turbines (special resistant to the polar winds ...).

The new station will be the first to exclusively use renewable energies (solar and wind energy) and will fully recycle all its waste. The choice of materials and technologies will respect the principles of eco-construction to reduce the environmental impact of the establishment of the base. This station will be made entirely in wood structure, with an insulating material from Switzerland, covered with stainless steel. It is the PREFALUX company in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg which is in charge of the construction.

Apparently it has evolved a little because the budget is based on the 11 M € and they are missing 3M €, a request for donations is under way, each can buy a piece of the station (the simple nut 10 € to the several thousand euro planks)

The project's stakeholders are largely sensitized and sensitized to the climate problem:

Ben is marked on all links :)

Here is another one:

The International Polar Foundation (IFP) presented 5 last September, the first "zero emission" polar station to be sent within a few days in Antarctica to conduct research on climate change.

After 39 years of absence, Belgium (for Elephant) will soon resume its scientific research in Antarctica thanks to its brand new polar station called "Princess Elisabeth". Built by the International Polar Foundation, at the request of the Belgian Federal Government as part of the International Polar Year, it will become the first station designed to minimize CO2 emissions both during construction and operation.

What is really good is that they have planned two diesel generators, in case : Mrgreen: : Mrgreen:

The generators are also noted in the article cited above:

Yes, but that sentence is weird, is not it?

To ensure a constant supply in energy, two generators of help will be installed.

Either it's rescue or it's production ... not the 2 ...
