Study on CO2 and current consumption by the General Commissariat for Sustainable Development (CGDD) ...

The carbon content of the current consumption basket

In 2009, each Frenchman has bought on average 700 kg of food, beverages and drugstore products, perfumery and hygiene. This average shopping basket contained 1,4 tonne carbon equivalent (eq.CO2). The content eq.CO2 per kg of purchases varies in a ratio of 1 to 25 approximately depending on the product category. Thus, fruits and vegetables constitute 20% of the weight of the basket and induce 7% of the carbon content of the purchases. In addition to the socioprofessional category of
household, it is its family composition and the period of its life that affect the carbon content of the current consumption basket.
