Stellarator Wendelstein 7-X, fusion of H2 on Earth yesterday?

by Christophe » 04/02/16, 17:13

Was there the first hydrogen fusion yesterday in Germany in the Stellarator Wendelstein 7-X?

This is what this article suggests: http://www.mpg.de/9926419/wendelstein7x-start (English)

But the article is not very clear on the fact that there was a merger or not ... in any case it rose high T ° ...

A Stellerator is an evolution of Tokamak technology:

Here is the most interesting passage:

This entails separation of the electrons from the nuclei of the hydrogen atoms. Confined in the Magnetic Cage generated by Wendelstein 7-X, the particles made up with the walls of the plasma chamber. "With a temperature of 80 million degrees and a lifetime of a second part, the device was first hydrogenated plasma has completely lived up to our expectations", states Hans-Stephan Bosch, whose division is responsible for operation of Wendelstein 7-X.

So not sure that there was fusion, the only info given in the article (I read it twice to be sure) is "This entails separation of the electrons from the nuclei of the hydrogen atoms." so the electrons have released ok and that's already good but that does not mean that there has been fusion of the nuclei ...

After that it is on 80 Millions of ° there is the chances that this is done ... but the article is not affirmative on this point ...

I am wrong?

They just managed to create a hydrogen plasma during 1 / 4 second ... we are far from initiating a sustainable nuclear fusion inside.

We have to meet Lawson's criteria and it's not pie in the absence of a very strong gravitational force that densifies the plasma.

That's what I thought ... more if the fusion reaction was initiated ... attention to the dissipation of energy but hey there I think they have thought!

It does not prevent 80 M degrees is more than 5 x the temperature of the heart of the sun (15 Millions ...) ... without the pressure obviously!

The ignition effect of an atomic bomb is the pressure ... I just watched the first season of Manhattan, it's not bad (there are freedoms of achievement but the backstory is based on reality):

it's not bad, but it's not used for anything.

that's the whole problem of "tokamak" and related machines. The gravitation of the sun is sorely lacking.

There would be a technique to compress the plasma with a very small dimension: the "Z pinch"

Widely developed a few years ago in the USA, and popularized by Jean Pierre Petit.

No more news from this research.

lokheed martin indicated to be able to develop an operational fusion reactor by 10ansans ... it should be known that this firm (first supplier of the US army) has a subsidiary ...Sandia corporation or is developed the ZR machine ... : Idea:

Sandia Laboratories (Sandia National Laboratories) are among the leading national laboratories of the United States Department of Energy. Managed by Sandia Corporation, a subsidiary of the Lockheed Martin group, the laboratories are present at two sites: one in Albuquerque, New Mexico and the other in Livermore, California, and partially manage the Pantex weapons dismantling plant. nuclear.

Their main mission is to develop, carry out and test the non-nuclear components of the United States nuclear weapons. Their other research and development missions focus on energy and environmental programs.

In particular, they have developed the Z machine, the world's most powerful X-ray generator for aging tests of nuclear weapons, and the ASCI Red supercomputer, the first computer with computing power superior to terafLOPS.

This thing came out a year ago with a big announcement effect.

What's new during this time?

It is unlikely that a firm as serious as Lokheed Martin will have such an April Fool's Day out.
Knowing the significant breakthroughs achieved in Sandia in a decade, it's a safe bet that it will succeed - may not be as early as announced - long before ITER ...
