UPM biorefinery in Alsace in Strasbourg?

UPM-Kymmene wants to set up a biorefinery in Strasbourg

The Finnish group UPM-Kymmene, which operates a
paper in Strasbourg, will study the possibility of adding a second generation biorefinery consuming co-products from the wood industry.

UPM will therefore start an environmental impact and risk study and launch a permit request on the Strasbourg site.

This process is expected to take approximately one year. UPM tested the gasification technology necessary for the production of biofuels from wood in partnership with Andritz / Carbona, near Chicago, in the United States. The initial test program has been successfully completed. UPM continues to develop the technical concept and the technological solution should be ready by summer 2010.

End of the environmental impact study for the UPM bio-refinery

The environmental impact study for the possible establishment of a refinery for second generation biofuels in Rauma and Kuusankoski in Finland has just been completed. The Southeast Finland Regional Environment Center, has published its official report on the study and notes that the latter, which includes a large amount of information on the different possibilities of implementation and their environmental impacts, has been particularly well prepared by the paper group. It concludes that the study is sufficient and meets the requirements of the law and EIA statutes (Environmental impact study). UPM is also studying the possibility of locating a refinery producing biofuels for transport to UPM production sites in other countries. In France, UPM will thus start an environmental impact and risk study and launch a permit application procedure in Strasbourg. The study would relate to the construction of a second generation bio-refinery on the Stracel paper mill site. This process is expected to take approximately one year. UPM tested the gasification technology required to produce biofuel from wood energy from forests in partnership with Andritz / Carbona, near Chicago, in the United States. The initial test program has been successfully completed. UPM continues to develop the technical concept and the technological solution should be ready by summer 2010.
