In fact, I am rather thinking about the possibility of a village living in autarky to face the economic crisis, and there I am studying the energy side. As you can see on the link below, I imagine a "tower" made up of a stirling engine at the bottom and an alternator at the top, capable of supplying current for small agricultural equipment for market gardeners. This tower is therefore a heat -> electricity converter. And it can be fed in several ways. First by solar dishes, or the combustion of waste, or the combustion of biogas, finally, everything that heats up. The excess heat is stored in the basement to be recovered during off-peak periods of no heating. What do you think ?

village in autarky
Super interesting as a subject ...
up to what level?
For water, doctors (sometimes specialists)?
Geographically, you would settle in which country, with which system with respect to property taxes / tax ...
What area / number of inhabitants are you targeting?
Anyway, I have no answer to your question but lots of questions

"the goal of every life is to end" !.
for you stipe
In fact, I invented a new currency capable of solving the economic crisis. https://sites.google.com/site/lafindelacrise/la-monnaie-or If this currency is capable of effectively resolving the crisis, this is not enough. Because there is the problem of interfacing this currency with the official currency. For example, when you have to convert this currency into official currency, you have to sell the gold it contains (technically it's very simple), but above all there is a tax of 17% on the resale of gold which therefore undermines the principle of this gold currency (unprofitable situation). Hence the need to be as self-sufficient as possible to stay as much as possible in this gold currency. So I ask myself the example of a rural village of 3000 inhabitants who would use this currency.
I first set myself the first objective, food self-sufficiency.
After reflection I realized that the model of the farmer operating large areas in intensive production is totally outdated. From now on, it must be small market gardeners producing in greenhouses. Thus, we distribute the work (more unemployment) and we involve the whole population.
One of the biggest interface points for market gardeners is energy. they are forced to buy fuel outside in official currency. Hence my current thinking for energy autonomy.
Belgians seem interested in the experience. If you want further details I answer your requests.

stipe, you're a joy flap!
we said: autarky village, not intergalactic spaceship
Everyone knows that with 5 to 6 billion extra human beings on this planet, such a system cannot be generalized.
However, in a country of average rainfall / sunshine, there are ways with a few ares / person to forget the water and energy bills.
However, this requires significant investments and non-self-sufficient supplies, such as spare parts and the internet.
For waste, consider for example its recovery: energy (direct or anaerobic digestion) or agricultural. (Compost)
You also have to want to: if I would willingly make a vegetable garden, the idea of killing the pig entices me less ...

together
it might be worth it to see yourself in REAL and reflect together on the subject, even if we do not apply it, we will have fun!

self-sufficiency is easy for water, including drinking water, it is raining enough at home, and I have been autonomous with my tanks for a long time
for food, culture and breeding it would be possible at a level larger than a village
but we don't just eat and drink
for clothing should we be content with the wool of our sheep?
for energy there are all kinds of means, but you still have to buy a lot of equipment for construction and maintenance: self-sufficiency would only be possible for a large well-governed country
in France, with the catastrophic deindustrialisation of the past few years, we are becoming underdeveloped:
to make energy with wood, I can make a gasifier ... but by buying steel made by arcelor mital ... indian company which has only a few factories in france
and the gasifier gas passes in a Chinese generator ... impossible to find French ... there are European engine but much more expensive
self-sufficiency at the village level is impossible: it is at the national level that economic self-sufficiency must be sought ... not even self-sufficiency
some years ago I would collect a lot of material from scrap merchants ... it is not even possible today ... it is sent more and more directly to China by whole container ... we even deprive of this resource!

Very interesting as a project, not easy, but simple, progressive, free, in the laws, which avoids errors, by assimilating scientific and legal common sense, obtained by being thoroughly informed, by understanding, which avoids ineffective solutions or too expensive.
The village level, with a lot of participants will be more effective.
Most commercial solutions have basic scientific errors, which should be avoided.
Low T thermal solar has the best efficiency, storable underground for greenhouses in winter, so well understood on a scientific and geological level, as in www.dlsc.ca which is to potash and understand thoroughly.
After the vegetable waste well dried in the sun, burnt gives the maximum heat, much more than biogas.
The solar Stirlings with concentration in summer and with energy recovered from the heat of burnt plants in winter, to heat, are good, but technically sharp and therefore to buy in a nice well thought out investment by learning a lot.
There is also the Peltier Seebeck effect for low energies, cheaper.
Concentrated summer solar stored underground very hot is too big a project considering the temperatures of 200 to 300 ° C, good for a beautiful collection of engineers.
The culture of algae is as heavy, except rudimentary tests, except in ponds, as for plants on land.
So educate yourself and collect huge documentation in all languages, especially English. Otherwise very expensive errors guaranteed !!
