Bee Cement or Wasp ????

by Pear Belle Helene » 24/09/09, 09:42

Hello econologists,

here is a photo sent to me by my sister. We don't really know what it is, but bees often turned in this corner, a covered courtyard, where chairs were stored.
It looks like cement, she didn't dare touch it.

Does that tell you something? Bees can do this kind of thing ???

Thank you for your help. Biz

Hello,
Bees don't do that kind of thing. The glands under their abdomen secrete the wax as well as the harder propolis which can be used as a varnish.
Apparently, the photo looks like the external structure of a defeated wasp nest. It should have the structure of paper (woody fibers that wasps grind with their mandibles to build their nest).

Hello

maybe an alien :?:

no, more seriously it is probably a wasp or hornet's nest, they can sometimes be very bizarre.

If you do not see any creature entering and leaving, it is probably an old abandoned nest that also looks in bad condition.
Wasps and hornets all die in winter. Only the queen survives by hibernating in a small individual nest.

Wow I browsed this site and I really learned a lot about the life of wasps.
Well, that doesn't make them more pleasant, but at least I know a little more about their lives. : Mrgreen:
