The modern man may be overall lazy and wasteful of resources and energies of all kinds, but when I see the number of convicts who push, pull, lift, run and pedal in the halls of sports (especially at this time before the beautiful days, history of getting a plastic presentable on the beaches ) I tell myself that there is probably a good amount of watts products that could be recycled wisely.
This is like the small water leak: some small drip of water that ooze from a tap, it's not much but it weighs heavily on the annual bill! ... and it's also the Hummingbird metaphor.

Re: The power (watt) of the man
let's specify nevertheless that the Romans were very gifted in civil engineering thanks to their slaves which replaced what fossil energy does today.
See “Energy Slaves” by Jancovici for more details.

Re: The power (watt) of the man
The slaves provided the energy, not only in Roman society, but were supplanted by the great superiority of mechanical motors, just as the wage earners who revolve around the machines will be replaced by "intelligent" interfaces (at least, considered in the in terms of their productive tasks).

And the wars had among other missions that of providing themselves as slaves ... And then we made wars for oil!

Re: The power (watt) of the man
We have moved a little away from the subject ... so I come back to the initial subject of the power of man and the recovery of human energy!
I have a question: on a bicycle, the energy provided by the muscles is transformed into mechanical energy in order to produce the displacement. This transformation passes by the pedals and the resulting power comes from the foot support on the pedal. The torque obtained depends on the length of the crank pedal (bar that connects the axis of the pedal to the axis of the pedal).
On my bike this crank measures 17 cm (pedal / pedal axis). For a mass of 50 kg what is the torque obtained when the crank is horizontal?
If we extend this crank 1 cm, which couple do we get?

Re: The power (watt) of the man
No matter the couple, the work provided will always be the same and very weak. The question of the amount of work that can be provided by a man is not new since it has been heavily used in the past and the result is well known. Admittedly, there are ingenious devices that maximize the use of these weak sources (and still others to discover), but all this remains at a modest level, perhaps and probably sufficient for the purpose of another type of society, but unsuited to the configuration of the current.

Re: The power (watt) of the man
It is very simple in the position where the crank is perpendicular: the moment is the product of the length of the crank by the force (to be converted into SI units: m for the length, N for the force).
So here 0,17 x 50 x 9,81
Note that it is not a torque of force and that there is, at the level of the bearing, an equivalent force, of opposite direction ...
Note that very quickly, the angle changes and the figure is no longer valid, even if a good "pedal" will try to make a progressive movement backwards (by "milling"), to correct this (but it will be then the muscles that will play, and no longer the weight, and hence the importance of grabbing the handlebars ...
And as said by ahmed, that does not change the power in any way, because the movement becomes more and more ample, but once lowered, you have to "go up" ...
