Nissan unveils its electric car, the "Leaf"

Japanese automaker Nissan Motor has unveiled its eagerly awaited electric car, the "Leaf", a key step towards its goal of ultimately dominating the clean vehicle sector.

The third Japanese automaker and its French partner Renault are the most ardent advocates of all-electric vehicles, announcing the plan to market cars of this kind worldwide from 2012.

Nissan will market its first Leaf in the United States and Japan in the second half of 2010.

Coupled with the presentation of its new model with the inauguration of the new Nissan international headquarters in Yokohama, a major port city near Tokyo, the president of Nissan and Renault, Carlos Ghosn, arrived on the scene aboard a blue prototype azure de la Leaf, with former Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and two other guests on board, in front of a crowd of journalists who had come from various countries of the world for this presentation.

“Today we are celebrating the start of a new era in the life of our company,” said Carlos Ghosn.

Nissan thus returns to Yokohama where the company was founded in 1933. For 41 years, its headquarters have been in the chic shopping district of Ginza, in the heart of Tokyo.
