Spain: 500 people fight fire in Catalonia
Some 500 people were fighting on Wednesday in Horta-de-Sant-Joan, in the south of Catalonia, against the fire which killed four firefighters the day before, announced the Minister of Defense, Carme Chacon.
The fire, declared Monday in the natural park of Els Port, not far from Tarragona (northeast), had burned Wednesday morning more than 800 hectares of vegetation, according to the regional government of Catalonia. Two other firefighters were seriously injured on Tuesday. The central government in Madrid offered all its logistical support to help extinguish the fire. After two dark years in 2005 (155.000 hectares burned) and 2006 (188.000), Spain has been relatively untouched by fires in the last two years, despite fairly large fires in the Canary Islands in 2007.
