Everything is done so that Electrabel keeps the monopoly

For Muriel Gerkens, Belgium could do without nuclear power in 2015 if there was a real political will. The head of the Ecolo-Groen group in the federal parliament also denounces the financial lobby which suggests that closing the power stations will be expensive.

Guest of Matin Première, Muriel Gerkens denounces the federal government's decision to extend the lifespan of nuclear power plants in Belgium by ten years. For the Ecolo-Groen group leader in the federal parliament, it is wrong to say that if we close the power stations there will not be enough electricity. There will be in 2015, she said, "the capacity to generate electricity to replace these three power stations. Using this argument as a scientific basis is sabotage, fraud!". And to specify that in Belgium there are gas-steam power stations, offshore wind turbines (which are being developed) and onshore (onshore wind turbines).

A biased report

The Gemix report (which recommends extending the lifespan of nuclear power plants in Belgium) is "built on assumptions", says Muriel Gerkens, although she has not yet seen it in order to be able to analyze it. For the ecologist, the report is "oriented". She thinks that, when ordering, the State wondered about "Will we still need nuclear power?", Instead of "Do we have the capacity and how to develop alternative production? ".

Muriel Gerkens specifies that in Germany, a file clearly established that nuclear power was "a production method on the decline given its cost and its outdated side to produce electricity".

Security not guaranteed

The Ecolo-Groen group leader also recalls that Belgium will be the first country in the world to operate power plants for more than 40 years. However, there is no guarantee that these plants will be able to hold out, she said. "How can we guarantee that the safety of Belgian citizens will be guaranteed?" There is a real risk but we do not talk about it. Not a word on waste either, she adds.

In addition, she denounces, "it is estimated at 800 million (euros, editor's note) the sum that will have to be invested to adapt the plants so that they can last 10 more years".

The lobby

Muriel Gerkens has the impression that "everything is being done so that Electrabel keeps the monopoly. It keeps its old power stations now and people believe that it is necessary". As for the words of Paul Magnette, the Minister of Climate and Energy, she interprets them as follows: "Maybe one day we will extend the others (power plants), not for the moment, let's be careful. We put a condition which is: you will have to invest in the renewable. So you will also be able to occupy all the field and the competitors (the other electricity producers), which we need, are put aside. And we will depend on good will of an actor who, in addition, sends his money to France rather than Belgium ".

Electrabel in a position of strength
The fact that the State needs money and that we have "refused to set up a system which would have made it possible to obtain the super profits of Electrabel every year" places this electricity producer in a position of strength , she says.

Muriel Gerkens affirms that the government is unable to obtain the sums claimed from Electrabel (250 million - 500 million euros). Appeals are emerging, she says and just read "the press releases" by Gérard Mestrallet, CEO of GDF Suez.

The price of energy

The Ecolo-Groen group leader believes that energy is already expensive in Belgium. She recalls that Electrabel has written off the power plants in 20 years and that today the company is making "large profits at the expense of consumers". And to add that there is "all this myth which has been set up by the financial lobby to make people believe that it will be expensive if we close the plants".

In conclusion Muriel Gerkens believes that she was had by her partners in the majority at the time. As soon as they continued without us in 2003, she says, "everything was put in place to never go out of it (nuclear, editor's note) and support the Electrabel monopoly".

How many mills do you need to replace a 1200-1350 MW ACEC turbo generator?

(in energy produced: KWh, not in power)

and TGV turbines are not renewable, as far as I know.
