freddau wrote:Yes, not only there.

A regular army faced with guerrilla or "resistance" supported by the people, it is a bit cho to stop.

My memories even go back to Chouan, Napoleon's Spanish war, resistance to WWII, etc.

Yes, we agree, it only prevents against this type of threat ("resistance" or "terrorism" depending on the point of view), it is better to invest in counter-espionage, the police and some commando units than in heavy armament. Problem: this type of investment is too light to artificially boost the growth of "gunsmith states".

The problem is that indiscriminate fire can spread the conflict to other Lebanese communities that have been unfairly bombed. One can fear answers other than that of Hezbollah.

The usual American wooden language dialectic:
- During this time, one arms without reserve Israel, which pours its bombs of invasions and civil, vengeful (and democratic) massacres.
- We oppose a veto, to counter a stop requested from the UN of these disproportionate bombings; and now, we finish for the rest ... go in the direction of the USA and Israel, leaving France to get stuck in the quagmire, and the bombing continues during this time.
- We take the opportunity to repeat the same things: it's the fault of Syria and Iran (which we will have to deal with soon, but not alone if possible ...)
After the 11/9 muddle, Iraq's lying shit, as soon as we still believe them!
- But that does not matter, we occupy the front of the stage pretending to act for peace, whereas they are doing the opposite now.

... or, at least, they pretend to believe it. : Evil: If the United States government really wanted to end the conflict, it would be very simple, it would suffice for them to stop unconditionally supporting Israel, in particular by vetoing any UN resolution containing the terms "cease-fire".

It's very easy to say in front of journalists "it must stop" and then torpedo any attempt so that it really stops. : Evil: : Evil: : Evil:

Targol, you are also undoubtedly right ...

The Israelis are doing the dirty work that the Americans would like to do but which they cannot afford because they have almost the entire international community against them but also after the fiascos in Afghanistan where the Taliban take back a little more ground every day and in Iraq or there is no need to make a comment, the situation is so dire there and more serious than under Hussein, it's sad to say but it is so ... :x

17:45 p.m. - Jerusalem The Israeli army warns the Lebanese population living south of the Litani River in southern Lebanon not to travel after 19 p.m. GMT.

18pm - Jerusalem Ehud Olmert affirms that "no limitation is imposed on the action of the Israeli army" in Lebanon and that the current offensive will continue.

-----------
Warning ! Curfew !

The Israeli army "allows itself" this evening, to play a game of massacre, on populations, who will live a night of anguish, between Litani and the border.

(Admitted fault, half excused ...)

Received this morning:

IMMEDIATE AND UNCONDITIONAL STOP OF BOMBING!
WITHDRAWAL OF THE ISRAELIAN TROOPS FROM LEBANON AND PALESTINE!
RESPECT FOR THE RIGHTS OF THE PALETINIAN AND LEBANESE PEOPLES
Gathering Wednesday August 9 in Nantes
18 p.m. in front of the monument to the 50 hostages

Faced with the war led by the State of Israel against the Republic of Lebanon and against Palestine, faced with the shameful passivity of the international community and the humanitarian emergency, the following unions, associations and political parties CGT 44, FSU 44, Solidaires 44, Sud PTT, Sud Rail, Ligue des Droits de l'Homme, MRAP, Secours Catholique Caritas France, Friends of the Ghassan Kanafani Cultural Foundation, Association France Palestine Solidarité, Washma solidarités, Collectif marée-noire, UFAL, Les Alternatives, LCR and PCF met on Monday August 7 in Nantes. In accordance with their specificities and analyzes, they decided to call together for a rally in solidarity with Lebanon and Palestine, for an immediate ceasefire, next Wednesday, August 9, 2006 in Nantes, at 18 p.m., on the square of the monument to the 50 hostages.

Since July 12, the Israeli army has gone to war against the Republic of Lebanon, indiscriminately killing armed elements and civilian populations and hitting military targets and civilian infrastructure. For the second time in 25 years, Israel is working to destroy an entire country.

Today in Lebanon, civilian deaths number in the hundreds, the injured in the thousands and refugees in the hundreds of thousands. Whole swathes of the country, towns, villages, hospitals, schools, road infrastructure, etc ..., are systematically shelled and destroyed by the Israeli army, while an oil spill, following the bombing of the Jieh power station, keeps pouring out and expanding.

At the same time, the Israeli government is continuing its open war against the Palestinian people, again systematically destroying its fragile economic infrastructure and even no longer hesitating to kidnap, imprison or assassinate its democratically elected representatives.

From Palestine to Lebanon, this war is the result of barbarism and war crimes that would be unanimously condemned if Israel were not a country protected and armed, against all odds, by the United States and its allies.

The permanent injustice which is done to the Palestinian people, the non-respect by Israel of the signed agreements and the resolutions of the United Nations (resolutions 242, on the return to the borders of 1967, resolution 194 on the right of return of refugees, resolution 338 on the cease-fire), and US support for the Israeli offensive are the primary obstacles to a political solution and to a just and lasting peace.

Because we refuse to be passive witnesses to the current barbarism, we call on all women and men in love with peace and justice to meet Wednesday, August 9 at 18 p.m. on the forecourt of the monument to the 50 hostages of Nantes to require :

- the immediate end of the bombardments and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Lebanon and Gaza,
- the release of all those kidnapped, captured and imprisoned,
- the application of all UN resolutions concerning Palestine and Israel,
- the guarantee of full sovereignty of Lebanon,
- the establishment of massive international aid to come to the aid of the hundreds of thousands of refugees and displaced persons from Lebanon and Palestine and to fight against the oil spill,
- that the rights of peoples, whether Lebanese, Israeli or Palestinian, come before any consideration of war escalation, through respect for international law, with a view to a political solution, a just and lasting peace.

I saw the debate and the film on Arte. I found Leïla Chahid's words clear, precise and not outrageous.
---------
I don't have time to give all my impressions of the latest events in London.
-----------
I see this evening ...
That there are heated discussions between the military and between Israeli politicians, “But the situation is far from simple for Israel since the two priority strategic objectives that were set have not been achieved. On the one hand, it was about restoring the deterrent credit of the Israeli army and preventing strikes in civilian localities in the north of the country. And on the other hand, to give Ehud Olmert a space for political maneuver vis-à-vis his neighbors in the region and the Palestinians. "

$ 1,6 billion, Defense Ministry estimate of the cost to Israel of the fighting in Lebanon since July 12.

“Since the start of the Israeli offensive, 1.103 people, including more than a thousand civilians, have been killed in Lebanon, the Lebanese government's Relief Commission announced Thursday (August 10th).
38 civilians have been killed in Israel in Hezbollah bombing raids since the conflict began on July 12. 68 Israeli soldiers died in action. "

I see that Israel has penetrated 7 km into Lebanon, while he said he was giving himself some time ...
“An Israeli unit occupies a Lebanese barracks in Marjayoun. ". The 350 Lebanese soldiers who were there are kept in the compound.
Considering the harassment of Hezbollah against this invading army, I consider that the Israeli army uses “human shields”, not consenting… (One more medal to their morality.)
