No wonderful results but it increases the collection. The radia itself, exploits any mid-season surplus at lower temperatures... As my sensors are quite inclined, there can sometimes be enough (or even too much) for DHW from mid February to mid April. This radiator contributes to the heating...

I think that partly hiding the panels is quite easy to do, indeed with a motorized "shutter" a bit like the shutters of the skylights. Yes, if you only want this function. To improve performance in winter, maybe fresnel lenses can bring a little more...
