MOBILE TELEPHONY
Scientists warn of laptop dangers
NOUVELOBS.COM | 15.06.2008 | 18: 51
According to David Servan-Schreiber and about twenty scientists, the cell phone could promote "the appearance of cancers in the event of long-term exposure". They list ten recommendations to limit the risks and formally advise against the use of the cell phone for those under 12 years old.
Twenty international scientists launched, Sunday, June 15, an appeal against the health dangers of the mobile phone.
This call, which appeared in Le Journal du Dimanche, is coordinated by David Servan-Schreiber, professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh and known for the success of his book "Cure" (2003). The signatories list ten main recommendations:
- do not allow children under 12 to use a mobile phone except in an emergency,
- keep the phone more than a meter from the body during communications using the speakerphone mode or a hands-free kit or a headset,
- avoid carrying a mobile phone as much as possible, even in standby,
- when carrying a mobile phone on your person, ensure that the "keyboard" side is directed towards the body,
- rather communicate by SMS, as this limits the duration of exposure and proximity to the device,
- stay more than a meter from a person on the phone and avoid using their mobile in the metro, train or bus, so as not to passively expose others,
- use the mobile phone only to establish contact or for short conversations,
- regularly change sides during a conversation and wait until the correspondent has picked up the receiver before placing the handset on the ear,
- avoid using the mobile phone when the signal strength is weak,
- choose a device with the lowest possible specific absorption rate.
Like asbestos and tobacco
According to the JDD, "scientists agree on two things: there is no formal proof of the harmfulness of the cell phone, but a risk exists that it promotes the appearance of cancer in the event of long-term exposure ".
"We are today in the same situation as fifty years ago for asbestos and tobacco. Either we do nothing, and we accept a risk, or we admit that there is a bundle of arguments worrying scientists ", explains Thierry Bouillet, oncologist at the Avicenne hospital in Bobigny and signatory of the appeal.
Among the other main signatories are Dr Bernard Asselain, head of the cancer biostatistics service at the Institut Curie, Pr Franco Berrino, director of the department of preventive and predictive medicine at the National Cancer Institute in Milan, Dr Thierry Bouillet, oncologist and director of the Institute of radiotherapy at the Avicenne hospital in Bobigny, Jacques Marilleau, engineer, former physicist at the Atomic Energy Commission and the CNRS in Orsay, or Joël de Rosnay, doctor of science.
