Shell needs sub ... to process its CO2

Shell wants to reuse its carbon dioxide

Shell Canada is seeking government support to implement a project to capture and reuse its own CO2 releases.

Shell Canada CEO Clive Mather told The Globe and Mail that the project would dramatically expand Canada's oil sands sector, without increasing the country's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The Canadian oil company is proposing to move the CO2 released from its facilities in Edmonton and Fort McMurray to oil fields that would make better use of it.

To date, neither of the two levels of government has provided incentives for companies to develop the technology, which is not profitable. According to Mather, Canada is poised to miss a golden opportunity to become a leader in CO2 capture and storage.

Some North American gas and oil companies are already reusing carbon dioxide in some of their old wells to extract more material. However, the technologies used most of the time use water or fluids from natural gas, which reduces their ecological value.

According to industry sources, the Shell project has yet to prove itself economically and requires a clear regulatory framework.

David Keith, a professor of environmental engineering at the University of Calgary, says the opportunities to use such a process are much less important than the need to reduce CO2 emissions at the source.

Nevertheless, he believes that the industry could adopt the capture technique even if it brings little economic benefit, since it would allow them to reduce their GHG emissions. On one condition, however: that the government soon set emission reduction targets that will serve as clear incentives for oil companies.

I like the "which is not profitable" ... Obviously as long as we have not quantified the cost of the planet these liberal-capitalist speeches we risk hearing them for a long time ...

"Well, if it's not us, someone else is polluting ..."

Yeah, it's up to the taxpayers to pay, the oil companies can not afford it : Mrgreen:
