In the UK, offshore wind turbines provided 6,2% of the electricity produced in 2017, according to the annual report from the Crown Estate, which manages the portfolio of assets associated with the British crown.

GE to test 12 MW wind turbine in the UK

The American GE renewables energy signed, on April 24, a five-year agreement with the British agency Ore Catapult for marine energies in order to develop and test its 12 MW Haliade-X wind turbine.

New power record for an offshore wind farm

The London Array, off the mouth of the Thames, is no longer the most powerful offshore wind farm in the world. Its 630 megawatts (MW) were dethroned by the 659 MW of the extension of the Walney park, also in the United Kingdom but in the Irish Sea, inaugurated on September 6.
50% owned by Ørtsed, and 50% equally by the Danish pension funds PFA and PKA, the Walney extension is also the first commercial park in the world to use wind turbines from two brands competitors.
Its 87 turbines were supplied by Siemens Gamesa for 40 of them and by MHI Vestas for the remaining 47. The London Array, inaugurated in 2013, displays a total of 175 turbines then supplied by Siemens.
Power soaring
In five years, the power of wind turbines has soared. The Walney extension is equipped with 7 MW turbines for Siemens and 8,25 MW for MHI Vestas. At the London Array, they peak at 3,6 MW.
Fewer turbines does not, however, mean less park power. Walney's extension, which should cover the electricity needs of 600 British households, covers 000 km145 compared to 2 km100 for the London Array whose production is equivalent to the electricity consumption of 2 households.

Hornsea One Hits 1GW Operational Capacity Mark

Siemens Gamesa has commissioned 147 out of the 174 7MW wind turbines on the Hornsea Project One, reaching 1GW of operational capacity at the world's largest wind farm.
The wind turbines are being installed at the site some 120 kilometers offshore Yorkshire by Fred. Olsen Windcarrier's jack-up vessel Bold Tern and A2Sea's Sea Challenger.
The first turbine was installed in February 2019 and the first power was delivered to the UK grid shortly thereafter.
The 1,214MW Hornsea Project One wind farm is expected to come fully online in 2020.
The wind farm is owned by Ørsted (50%), also the developer of the project, and Global Infrastructure Partners (50%).

Equinor reported that it will intervene in the development of three large-scale offshore wind power projects in the Dogger Bank region in the North Sea, United Kingdom.
This will be the largest enclave of offshore wind farms in the world, with a total installed capacity of 3.6 gigawatts, and the wind energy projects are expected to produce enough energy to power the equivalent of 4.5 million homes In the British country.
The Dogger Bank wind farm, which will be jointly executed with the SSE company, associate of Equinor, will consist of three wind farm projects: Creyke Beck A, Creyke Beck B and Teesside A.
Each project will have an installed capacity of 1.2 GW and together they can cover approximately five percent of the estimated electricity generation in the United Kingdom.
It is also expected that the execution of these will trigger a capital investment of more than 11 billion dollars between 2020 and 2026 and the first generation of energy is planned for 2023.
Successful offers for the world's largest offshore wind development represent a game changer for our offshore wind business and support the development of Equinor as a large energy company. A large-scale development of Dogger Bank will constitute an industrial wind energy center in the heart of the North Sea, Eldar Sætre, CEO of Equinor, said.

General Electric's giant wind turbine will equip the world's largest offshore field

General Electric and its giant Haliade-X 12 MW wind turbine, largely made in France, have been chosen to equip a gigantic offshore wind farm under development off the coast of Great Britain, the parties announced on Tuesday.
GE Renewable Energy will be the "preferred supplier of wind turbines" for Dogger Bank Wind Farms, a joint venture between the Norwegian Equinor and the British SSE Renewables, selected in mid-September to develop off Yorkshire "the largest field of offshore wind turbines in the world" . No commercial details have been communicated, the final number of wind turbines still to be confirmed.
This equipment is presented by GE as "the most powerful offshore wind turbine in the world" with 12 MW. It is manufactured in Saint-Nazaire for the nacelles and Cherbourg for the blades. The mast is made in Seville, Spain.
This will be the "first wind farm in Europe to install and operate these innovative turbines," said Paul Cooley, director of capital projects at SSE Renewables, in a statement on Tuesday. "This pioneering low-carbon technology will play a critical role in helping the UK achieve carbon neutrality by 2050," he adds.
This new Haliade-X 12 MW wind turbine had already been chosen by the Danish group Ørsted for two of its wind farms in the American sea. Ørsted should therefore be the first operator.
In total, the British wind farm will consist of three 1,2 GW projects located in the North Sea, about 130 km from the coast, an investment of 9 billion pounds (10,2 billion euros). Land-based construction is expected to start in early 2020, and energy production to start in 2023.
