Sen-no-sen, I was happy to let you take care of this thermodynamic interpretation!
this sentence must ring odd in the ears of many, if we take it literally (which I do not encourage!): in most countries the wealth gap between the bottom and the top of the social scale continues to increase (an effect of the automatic "equilibrium" of the markets?), see here.
If we stick to this deterministic relationship, "happiness" becomes a rare commodity and this way of achieving it very difficult ...

... having more than the people around us will make us feel happier.

Have more of what? More happiness than his neighbor ...?
I think as long as people think like that no one will achieve happiness ...
There is an old saying which says that "money does not buy happiness", indeed it makes everyone unhappy, especially those who do not have enough (malnutrition, no access to medical care , no roof), those who have just what it takes struggle every day to earn it and pay the bills, those who have too much are afraid of being robbed.
Amha happiness starts when you can share it with your neighbors, in quality, not in quantity!
Have a good day

Holds: as long as we talk about happiness no one has yet mentioned masochism here ...
You know, that thing that makes you happy when you're in pain ...!
Because there are sometimes some here who take pleasure in sawing the branch on which he sits.
It's always like that, after when you fall from the tree and at best you break your arm it can hurt a lot, but you have to come and complain later.

Chinese proverb: "Happiness is not a goal to be reached but a path to be covered."
I wish you all to walk the path of your happiness, not by the force of thought (self-suggestion has its limits) but by the sweetness of the heart.
As said on the first page, when we shit ...
The happiest person I have ever met in my life was a Russian woman who had known the gulag and who bore the aftermath of the tortures that had been inflicted on her. And yet happiness (but also an extraordinary inner peace) could be read on his face.
Having had a difficult childhood (public assistance) I can tell you that I love my happiness every day: with my wife, my son, my friends, my vegetable garden, my cats, my motorbike ... everything is a pretext for happiness
As for material needs, apart from the basic necessities (roof, food and therefore work), happiness is knowing how to do without what you don't have.
As for fools, don't we say "a happy fool"
