La Maxe: EDF power plant closes after 44 years of activity
09/04/2015 France3-region
A page in Lorraine's industrial history turns Thursday, April 9 with the shutdown of unit 2 of the La Maxe thermal power plant. A shutdown scheduled for a long time by EDF as part of the program to modernize the thermal fleet in France.
44 years of activity
From this Thursday, April 9 at noon, electricity will no longer be produced on the La Maxe site, which closes after forty-four years of activity.
After shutting down Unit 1 on Wednesday 1 April - one of the two coal-fired production units at the EDF Lorraine power station - the second and last unit was definitively shut down on Thursday 9 April.
The shutdown of these two coal-fired electricity production units is part of the industrial strategy implemented by EDF and aimed at modernizing the French thermal fleet, which must meet and adapt to new environmental legislation. These new standards will come into force on January 1, 2016.
Shutdown of old sites, renovation of new ones
EDF has undertaken a vast modernization of the electricity fleet in France, which has resulted in the shutdown of the oldest plants - ten production units in total in recent years - including La Maxe. The program also includes the in-depth renovation of the most powerful and most recent power plants - in Le Havre and Cordemais - and the commissioning of new gas-powered tools
Once shut down, in September, the La Maxe power plant will be transferred to the EDF post-operation center, which will begin the deconstruction of the facilities and supervise the main stages of security. The duration of the deconstruction should extend over ten years.
UEM takes over
Work to transmit electricity from this week is underway, to offset the activity of the plant once shutdown. It is now UEM, the electricity production company in Metz, which will supply the site.
The plant has 110 employees, very moved by the closure of the site, and who will remain until this summer to clean it. "I think I spent more Christmas and New Years in the plant than in my family," said Bernard Dandola, the operations manager. The majority of employees have chosen their new positions, around twenty of them will retire. Cattenom will host the majority of the workforce.
80 million megawatts / hour produced since 1971
In 44 years, the La Maxe plant will have produced 80 million megawatts / hour.
This Thursday noon, the burners will be turned off and the plant cut off from the network.
