Scams and energy business "without" CO2

Already seen up and down about the global eco-balance of alternative solutions to fossil energy, Arte returns tonight on the subject: http://www.arte.tv/guide/fr/046346-000/ ... gie-propre

The false promise of clean energy
Tuesday 14 May to 20h50, 52 min

The finding is worrying: some of the solutions advocated for producing 'clean' energy have the opposite effect. This is how biofuels actually contribute to the increase of CO2 emissions. Survey around the world on not really green energies.

By 2050, electricity providers will need to produce energy without emitting carbon dioxide (CO2). Wind and solar offer hope, while they cover only 1% of the energy supply in Europe. In contrast, the biogas industry is growing. The only concern: to supply this sector, you need biomass, organic matter, which, after transformation, will produce energy. Originally, it had to come from agricultural waste. But, in the end, farmers prefer to grow corn, and use for that ... oil. The gasoline consumed by the 7 500 German biogas plants generates 2,5 million tonnes of CO2 per year, data that are not included in the carbon footprint of the European Union. This cereal also serves as a base for biofuels. In Europe, the extension of its production is to the detriment of forage plots or peat bogs which constitute important reserves of CO2. In Brazil, it causes the destruction of entire areas of the Amazon rainforest, releasing tons of greenhouse gases. In Europe, thermal power plants are supposed to replace coal with wood, but the results are hardly convincing. Everywhere, multinationals regulate the energy market. This documentary gives the floor to peasant trade unionists, experts, European commissioners and environmental activists to better decipher certain collusions of interest between politicians and industrialists.
