New Helmholtz institute on "solar fuels" in Berlin

The Helmholtz Center in Berlin (HZB), already specialized in materials and energy, has decided to broaden its research spectrum to "solar fuels" by creating a dedicated institute on July 1, 2012. It will be headed by the Dutchman Roel van de Krol.

The term "solar fuel" refers to the production of fuel from the sun. The most common example is the use of solar energy to break down a water molecule and produce hydrogen. The objective pursued is of course to obtain both a new resource that can be used in transport but also a form of energy storage.

The work of the institute aims at the development monolithic systems, allowing to unite in a single structure a semiconductor material and a catalyst. The research will focus on metal oxides and the possibilities of modifying them at the nanoscale to optimize semiconductor costs and performance. On the other hand, the Institute's researchers will focus on understanding all the steps of the energy transformation process by using the characterization methods available to the HZB for its other research on solar cells. The interdisciplinarity existing within the HZB (driver physics, materials chemistry, surface science and interfaces ...) is also an asset for this new institute, which should work in parallel with the Technical University of Berlin.
