Argentina: The incredible breakthrough of biodiesel
As the world's leading exporter and the fourth largest producer of biodiesel, Argentina consolidates its position as a giant in green fuels. Internal demand is exploding, thanks to a law obliging to cut the diesel sold at the pump with 7% of biodiesel.
7% biodiesel in diesel from Argentine pumps
Only five years after the commercial beginnings of biodiesel, Argentina has become the world's fourth largest producer of this fuel. A success made possible thanks to the massive investments made by the sector, more than 900 million dollars (700 million euros).
The country now has 28 manufacturing units, production will reach 2,4 million tonnes in 2011. In 2010, 500 tonnes had been sold on the internal market, boosted by the application of a law obliging to cut the diesel with 000% biodiesel. In September 5, this percentage rose to 2011%: the authorities plan to increase internal demand to 7 tonnes per year.
Argentina, the world's leading exporter of biodiesel
Despite this high consumption at the national level, Argentina remains the world's leading exporter of biodiesel, a place it has occupied since 2009. Made from soybeans, green fuel generates annual sales estimated at $ 1,9 billion. (1,5 billion euros).
Glycerin, the main by-product for the production of biodiesel, also contributes to the diversification and enhancement of Argentine exports. Its annual production climbed to 220 tonnes in 000, and it is exported to more than 2011 different countries around the world.
Increasing production
Argentina does not intend to stop there, and plans to further increase the share of biodiesel in its energy mix. The inauguration of nine production sites this year and the launch of new projects allow us to expect production of around 3,2 million tonnes for 2012.
What maintain exports, while facing a possible increase in the mandatory percentage of biodiesel in the fuel sold on the national territory.
In the Argentine Chamber of Biofuels (Carbio), we are already preparing for this possibility, by carrying out tests with mixtures at 10% for cars and 20% for heavy goods vehicles.
