Pressure measurement with a column of liquid
The first pressure measurements were made using columns of liquids. The mercury column is still used today, in many medical offices, to measure blood pressure in particular.
The expression “atmospheric pressure is 712 mmHg” is also used in meteorology. This means that the height of the corresponding mercury column is 712 mm (1 mmHg = approx. 1,3 mbar).
