But why then want to kill these innocent critters at all costs?

They are not innocent. They will be the cause of a serious accident if I do not act because the branch inside which they are digging their nest is 10m high.

Before removing them, I promise to make the usual summons ... : Cheesy:

Minor bottom hornets? LOL!
More seriously, hornets only occupy a cavity that suits them. Probably dug beforehand by a couple of peaks.

Killing the hornets will therefore in no way resolve the hypothetical problem of weakening of the said branch.

On the other hand, it is the caterpillars which will thank you for having removed their worst enemies and finally .... the tree will surely be worse.

Up to you ....

Furthermore, if you look at your photos you will see that the tree has already started the solution: the bark has very marked growth cracks in the cavity, which means that it makes more wood for compensate for the fragility of the area.

The hornets are prodigious cardboard makers, but in no case perforators!

As the hornets did not respond to the summons, I took action last night around 23:00 p.m.

I soaked the insecticide rag and pressed it against the flight hole using the ladder set to the correct height.

Photos taken this morning:

Then I removed the scale ... : Lol:

I wonder if I would not have been fooled by this sentence ...8) :
They are digging inside the branch.

You were talking about targeted destruction, but I can see that, contrary to your claims, you are practicing it on a large scale!: P

Astonishing! The flight hole is 1,5 cm in diameter.

I plugged it with a piece of wood:

That, we will see ...

10 meters from my oak tree, at the neighbor's house, there is a pine tree infested with processionary caterpillars. The neighbor does not want to do anything and tells me that we must let Mother Nature act. The hornets don't give a damn about his tracks.

Unbelievable !

The hole in the nest is where a small branch fell a while ago, leaving a very soft wood first and then a hole afterwards. There are many others (!) And there is always a protuberance at the base of a branch, long before there is a cavity:

It remains to assess the dimensions of the cavity.
