Storage at sea by pumped storage (STEP Maritime) of renewable electricity

Renewable energies except solar electric or thermal (seeforums dedicated below): wind turbines, energy from the sea, hydraulic and hydroelectricity, biomass, biogas, deep geothermal energy ...

PS: and of course, great work to multiply the projects of STEP, should begin by making an evaluation of all the eligible sites.

In the same family I ask the little sister: the pumping station turbines in old coal mines ...

Germany and the United States are planning to convert former coal mines into solar and wind energy storage sites. Projects are being tested.

Would wind turbines and solar panels be the lifeline for old disused coal mines? With the rise of renewable energies in world production, electricity generation is increasingly not when the demand is strongest, but when the weather permits; we must find ways to store energy for demand peaks.

In the United States and Germany, coal companies are advancing a recycling solution: turning their old mines into gigantic energy storage networks thanks to a widely proven technique [known since the end of the 19th century and used in hydroelectric installations] , in order to be able to provide electricity without suffering the vagaries of the weather.

In Southwest Virginia [US], Dominion Energy and Appalachian Power, a subsidiary of American Electric Power (AEP), are both planning a new power plant in this former mining region .

little tablecloth corner calculation as I like from the figures of this article:
1 Million of m3 on 1200m high. the theoretical potential energy is mgh is about 3270MWh
with a turbulence yield of 85% to the big ladle (pessimist), it is about 2800MWh of energy.
the article says that the (power) capacity is 200MW which means that the power plant can supply these 200MW for about 13h which is excellent.
