to respond to loondie, bham summed up the situation well: it is not a question of black but of self-construction. digging a trench by hand is not easy.

Otherwise, fully agree with Zac: in France self-construction is not really easy or encouraged.

Do not dream, on all sites there is self-construction (no problem if you work for yourself), but in the case where you use an undeclared third party (in black), it is better not that there is concern.
Anyway the guy is no more in good standing than the one who employs him, because he has no right to do this work.

We see them on all construction sites, every weekend.

It seems to me that there is insurance to cover all accidents on a self-build site. See the beaver association in your region.
