I never learned to do such thorough calculations that's why I say "instinctively" but in what you answer I conclude that if the engines work only a third of the time it is that they are three times too big and they are used for acceleration which I think uses more energy than maintaining a constant speed.
But if everyone has been doing this for years, there is a good reason.

My daily practice of electric vehicles has taught me that when running flat, a vehicle is very often in zero or negative charge ...
During our "economy rallies" we strive to consume a minimum of Amps, the hardest part is not to consume little, the hardest is to anticipate sufficiently the decelerations not to go into regeneration phase, little profitable in EV (and impossible in thermal).

If for so many years, the participants of the eco-marathon and the EducEco Challenge have been operating in intermittent mode, it is for good reasons ...
:?
The controls of the electric motors work in the same way (current choppers), the controls of the rockets also, and the forced transition of our cars to hybridization is part of the same strategy (but it should not be said)
The start & stop which cuts the heat engines when stopping at a red light (it is more economical than leaving the engine running after 15 seconds of stopping), this start & stop will extend to deceleration phases as on the Prius, then only in the power demand phases as on a Chevrolet VOLT which is no longer a hybrid but an electric car assisted by a heat engine ...

We are in an extremely low power range. As a reminder, 1nm and 1 cv. A lower power motor is accompanied by parts with lower mechanical resistance. However, the constraints on the crankshaft for example are that to pull a mass of 100 kg. [/ Quote]

Hello,

Citro, I am of your opinion for the anticipation of the profile or the obstacles of the course but I lack something to understand the gain of this discontinuous operation.

GG do you know what was the minimum displacement used in previous events?

We manage more than the anticipation of the profile, the climatic conditions, such as the wind, ... are also taken into account.
There is no minimum displacement, but below 25 cc the engine parts begin to become too small for the constraints imposed on them ...

As I explained, in discontinuous operation, we are at full load, so we optimize the performance.
As soon as the speed objective is reached, the engine is shut down, therefore zero consumption instead of yield losses of up to 100% if the vehicle is going downhill, even at idle speed ...

If all the cars shut down their engine and coasted as soon as you lift your foot off the accelerator, consumption would drop easily by 50% ... Unfortunately this is not possible as long as all the auxiliary components are not are not electric (power steering, brake assist pump ...)
There were, however, a few timid precedents, such as the “Formel E” Volkwagen which had a freewheel position.

As well as the trajectories, the times of passage ... Exactly as in F1. 8)

The secret comes simply from the fact that we are quite a lot of people (5 on the prototype), 2 on the acquisition of data, 1 on the race strategy and 2 on a test bench.
However, in 4 months, it is hard to build a prototype from A to Z, we hope to have finished on time and get a reliable prototype ...

Ah I am someone stubborn, OK for the full load of the engine but if it allows the vehicle to go at a speed much higher than that requested in the test it is because it is too ... big . : Lol:
Long ago I practiced off-road competition but the goal was quite the opposite.
How was your team created and what is your schedule of events?

And I continue to say that smaller, the components will not support the efforts required!: Cheesy: We can go slower with a shorter transmission. Any engine can drive any machine to the desired speed if the transmission is adequate. Simply, the time to get there will increase.
It is a school project. In the first part of the year, groups of 5 students each made a frame. And here in the second half of the year, a group is chosen (me in this case) to move on to construction as part of an end of study work. Unfortunately, the work carried out the first part of the year was useless, the teacher wanting to demean a lot and reduce the width of the prototypes designed ...
