CO2 releases: it is dangerously accelerating

by Christophe » 20/11/06, 16:41

CO2 emissions, the main greenhouse gas, increased four times faster between 2000 and 2005 than in previous years, according to an analysis published by an international consortium of scientists, the Global Carbon Project (GCP). Despite efforts to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide, the situation is worsening worldwide. The growth rate of CO2 emissions was 0,8% in the 90s, it is now 3,2%. Drastic measures are therefore necessary to cap greenhouse gas emissions, according to the GCP, which met in congress in Beijing until yesterday.

China has become the second largest emitter of CO2 after the United States, but is not among the countries concerned by the Kyoto Protocol on the reduction of greenhouse gases (GHG).

Under these conditions, it will be very difficult to stabilize the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere at 450 ppm - linked to a 2 ° C rise in global temperature - or even 550 ppm (parts per million), estimates the GCP . The current emissions correspond to one of the scenarios developed by the IPCC, the United Nations climate study group, which predicts that 50% of the energy will be of fossil origin and that atmospheric levels of CO2 will cause catastrophic climate change.
