To return to the snow, the North American continent is affected in turn: http://www.radio-canada.ca/nouvelles/Na ... -usa.shtml

US storm hits the Maritimes

The blistering snow storm in the northeastern United States began to affect the eastern provinces of Canada.

The snow began to fall on Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Gaspé. Some regions may receive more than 30 centimeters of snow.

Environment Canada issued a freezing drizzle warning for Nova Scotia and a blizzard warning for New Brunswick, where winds could reach 100 kilometers per hour. On Monday morning, many flights were canceled in Halifax and Moncton.

Everywhere, the high sea level threatens to cause more damage.

State of emergency in six US states

In the United States, the storm, which has already wreaked havoc in transportation, continues to bring large amounts of snow. Between 30 and 50 centimeters are expected in places, Monday.

Six states declared a state of emergency: Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Virginia. Blizzard warnings are in effect in New Jersey and New York City, as well as in Rhode Island and most of eastern Massachusetts, according to the National Weather Services.

More than 1400 flights were canceled overnight for all three New York airports and further cancellations are expected throughout the day.

Canadians planning to travel to the United States were also hit by bad weather. Toronto's Pearson Airport and Montréal-Trudeau Airport have canceled dozens of flights to major US cities such as New York, Boston and Washington. Although some airlines are trying to accommodate them, many travelers have had to spend the night in the country.

On the rail side, Amtrak suspended its connections between New York and Maine on Sunday night, and the Long Island Rail Road in New York, the nation's largest suburban transportation network, stopped its trains. Coach companies have also discontinued their service on coastal routes.

Traffic is also very difficult in many areas that have experienced a large number of accidents and road trips.

Meteorological premieres

The city of Columbia, South Carolina, has had its first Christmas snow since weather reports were compiled in 1887. Atlanta was entitled to 2,5 centimeters of snow, the first accumulation on Christmas Day since 1880.

Finally the gulf stream may not be a major player in this polar winter, see other explanations here: https://www.econologie.com/forums/gulf-strea ... 10281.html

It was so beautiful ... the shock was great to see it like this, yesterday afternoon ....

A 400 or 500 year old Cedar from Lebanon that I wanted to register as a "remarkable tree" this year : Cry:

I measured the edge of the trunk at the place where I could do it again ... 5.40m circumference !!! 6 m at the base?

See this to tell you that I do not tell you a joke ...

The ecology cat is in mourning for his tree brother, note the weak rooting of the lord of the park .... this winter has been one too much, obviously! (unless it is in front of the human bullshit that the lord is inclined, more likely than the snow)

Snow: government solutions in times of crisis

Learn from the chaos caused by snow on roads and trains in early December. This was the purpose of the round table organized on Monday 10 January, at the Ministry of Ecology.

Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet, Minister of Ecology, Thierry Mariani, Secretary of State for Transport, and Frédéric Lefevbre, Secretary of State for Trade, received representatives from SNCF, RATP and Météo-France as well as professional federations and user associations.

Ten proposals were made. "We have established responsibilities. (...) We do not want to designate scapegoats. Our proposals focus on solutions," Kosciusko-Morizet stressed..

* First measure adopted: agents of Météo France, an organization criticized by the government after the crisis, will be present in each PC having to deal with a meteorological crisis. Their mission: to monitor and manage road traffic in the event of a crisis.

* Regarding public transport, priority bus routes will be defined and the snow removal of these routes will adapt accordingly in case of heavy snow, especially in the small suburbs of Paris. This measure should be put in place next winter.

* The SNCF is not immune to criticism: the company will have to work with the manufacturers to make its trains more resistant to cold and snow. It will also have to study ways to better maintain the rail infrastructure. The company and Réseau Ferré de France (RFF) have one month to identify the actions to be undertaken in 2011.

* Another black point put forward: information to the population. "What has been particularly shocking for millions of French people is the question of information," insisted Mr. Lefebvre. The government is considering a warning system, relying on radio, television, Internet and transport companies, in the event of a weather crisis. The SNCF, it wants to equip its 10 500 smartphones controllers from next year so that SMS are sent to passengers to warn them of difficulties during snow.

* For roads, the State wants to redefine the bans on heavy goods vehicles and set up priority routes for relief and public transport. To improve the coordination of intervention services (snowplow type), they will be equipped with GPS this year in the Ile-de-France and Eastern region, and within two years throughout France. If the salt supply will have to be secured so that the equipment services have, for all winter, enough to hold at least eight days, the snow tires will not be made mandatory, the minister noted.

The government has not completed its consultations yet. Thursday, it will be the turn of the representatives of airports, airlines and tour operators to see how to prevent the disorganization that had seized Roissy at Christmas time to happen again.
Thibault jourdan

Euuuuh ... The 1ere reassure me: it's a joke ??? Météo France will manage the traffic? What's their job again? What is this country of rednecks?

The ONLY solution against blocking the snow (ask Quebecers) is to be reactive, to learn to work at the DDE (trade unionists included) and to commit human and material resources.

I do not know pkoi but I do not think for a second that it will be less bad next time ... bands of rednecks ... : Evil:

You do not have to teach them how to work, but to get out of the office and into the field.

Do not worry, they're not in the office anymore. They left before to go home before the traffic jams : Mrgreen:

If not a joke, there is 30 years in Lorraine we drove on white roads. Of course there were salting and snow plowing, but we knew how to ride on the snow and we were equipped with snow and studded tires.
When the school bus, the "Rapides de Lorraine" bus parked in front of our house and if it started (so the diesel had not frozen) we went to the Lycée and that despite the state of the road.
One day we and Janine (the driver) had to wait in the broken bus on a small country road that a car passes to warn the carrier in Metz and that we are sent another bus and a tow truck (no mobile phone 30 years ago). Arrived at the school on time to go to the cantoche. Frozen gasoil ...

In short I do not understand that what we did 30 years ago we do not know how to do it today ... Except that we have much heavier cars (inertia) and more powerful and coupleuses (transfer of too much power wheel ground) and that we are so used to driving aids that we no longer know how to drive.

Well not for everyone ...

Without going so far, when I was in college (there is 16-20 years) we lived at the top of a pass, at 800m altitude, and yet I did not miss a single day of court because snow and in the evening I always came home with the school bus!
And yet snow was often ...
